If you have children or are at least 10 weeks pregnant, you could be eligible for further help with the cost of living

We understand that many families in the New Forest are feeling the pressure of rising food prices, energy bills, and other everyday costs. If you’re struggling to make ends meet, you’re not alone and there is help available.

Over one million families in the UK with children are missing out on up to £2,000 a year towards childcare costs. Even if you claim benefits you may be eligible for further help such as Holiday Activities and Food Programme.

Use this calculator to find out how much you could get towards approved childcare. This includes free childcare for children aged between two and four. You may also find help with childcare costs if your child is under 16 or under 17 and disabled.

Child Benefit

Child Benefit is available to parents or guardians with children under 16 years old (if you have earning less than £80,000).

Food Banks

Foodbanks, community fridges and pantries are available across the New Forest if you need help with food.

Council Tax

New Forest District Council provides assistance with Council Tax, housing support, and discretionary hardship payments.

Energy Saving

Energy saving advice and grants may also be available to help lower your household bills.

If you are at least 10 weeks pregnant you might be eligible a Healthy Start Card. This card can help you with the costs of fruit, vegetables, milk and infant formula. You might also be able to get free vitamins.

Statutory Maternity Pay

Statutory Maternity Pay (SMP) is available to those who are pregnant and employed. You’ll get 90% of your average weekly earnings (before tax) for the first 6 weeks, followed by £187.18 or 90% of your average weekly earnings (whichever is lower) for the next 33 weeks.

Family Hubs & Children’s Centres

There are lots of local Family Hubs and Children’s Centres across the New Forest that can offer parenting support, early years activities, and signposting to childcare or financial advice.


Free School Meals

Your child may get free school meals from Year 3 if you receive certain benefits, like Universal Credit, and your income is below a set amount. You can apply through Hampshire County Council.

School Uniform Banks

School uniform banks are available through schools and local charities. Ask your school what help they can provide.  If you’re in New Milton, Ashley, Pennington or Lymington, Step Up Safe Space may be able to help too. 

Free Holiday Provision

The Holiday Activities and Food programme provides support to families across the New Forest throughout the Easter, summer and winter school holidays. Children can try a range of fun activities and enjoy tasty meals.

In partnership with Stronger Together Across Ringwood & Fordingbridge and Ringwood Food Bank, Citizens Advice New Forest has a dedicated Schools Adviser, working in eight local schools across Ringwood and Fordingbridge.
